Most Montréal garages do three jobs. They park the car. They store gear. They double as a workshop. That mix fills the space fast.
Good garage organization fixes this. Split the space into zones. Use the walls and the ceiling. Keep what you use often within reach. With a plan, most homeowners can clear their parking spot in one weekend.
This guide covers planning, wall and overhead storage, zones, seasonal gear and when custom cabinets make sense. It works for single bays, double garages and narrow townhouse garages.
Why Garage Organization Matters
Clutter costs money. You buy tools you already own because you cannot find them. A mower stuck behind four stacked bins rusts all winter. Gloves and drill batteries sit on cold concrete.
Safety matters too. Loose boxes and tools create trip hazards. Paint, motor oil and chemicals need a closed cabinet, out of children’s reach. Heavy boxes on sagging shelves can fall.
Daily life gets easier. You can grab the snow shovel in seconds during a storm. You can find the drill without a 20-minute hunt. A tidy garage also makes a better impression when you sell or rent.

Start With a Garage Storage Plan
Plan before you buy. Many people buy shelves first. Then the shelves do not suit their items or their walls.
Measure the space. Note the length, width and ceiling height. Mark every fixed item: the house door, windows, electrical panel, garage door tracks and the swing of the car doors.
Sort your belongings. Common groups are tools, garden gear, sports equipment, seasonal decor, paint and chemicals, and bulk household items.
Mark zones on the floor. Use painter’s tape. You will see where parking, walkways and storage fit.
Use the frequency rule:
- Daily or weekly items go at eye or waist height.
- Monthly items go higher or deeper.
- Yearly items go overhead.
Keep a clear walkway of about 36 inches from the house door to the car.
At Design & Supply, we follow the same steps. We start with your measurements and photos, then design the layout with you. You can send them through our 3-Step Space Planner.
Use Wall Space for Garage Organization
Walls hold more than most people expect. Wall storage frees the floor and keeps tools in sight.
Common wall options:
- Pegboard costs less and suits light hand tools.
- Slatwall uses slotted panels for hooks and bins.
- Rail and track systems let you move hooks as your needs change.
- Wall cabinets keep paint, oil and chemicals closed and out of sight.
Good items to hang include shovels, rakes, step ladders, extension cords, hockey sticks and lumber.
Arrange walls by use. Give one wall to tools and hardware. Give another to sports gear and kids’ items.
Wall safety. Anchor brackets into at least two studs. Use lag bolts. Follow the load limit on the product.
Garages with odd walls or low ceilings often need a custom fit. Our custom garage cabinets are built to your wall and ceiling height.
Overhead Garage Storage: Put the Ceiling to Work
Overhead storage means racks, platforms and pulley lifts fixed to the ceiling joists. Most homeowners never use this space.
It suits items you need a few times a year. Think camping gear, coolers, luggage, holiday decor and winter tires in totes during summer.
A bike lift uses a pulley to raise a bike flat against the ceiling. It works well in narrow garages.
Overhead safety:
- Leave clear space above your vehicle, including SUV roofs and roof boxes.
- Keep racks away from the garage door tracks and opener.
- Fix racks to joists, not to drywall.
- Place heavy items close to the supports.
- Measure your own door. Residential garage doors are usually 7 or 8 feet high.
Racks, Shelving and Bins
Choose storage based on what you keep and how often you reach for it.
- Bikes: wall hooks or vertical racks.
- Tires: a freestanding rack keeps a set off the floor.
- Heavy items: steel shelving about 18 inches deep and 48 inches wide holds paint cans and car parts.
- Bulky items: heavy-duty hooks hold hoses, cords and power tools.
- Small items: clear bins with labels you can read from the front.
Put the heaviest items on the lowest shelves. Keep mid-weight items at waist height. Store light and seasonal items up high.
Snow melt makes garage floors wet. Keep everything off the floor on steel or coated racks. Plastic shelves can sag under weight.
Garage Organization Systems vs. Random Storage
A system brings cabinets, drawers, wall panels, overhead racks and a workbench into one plan. Random storage grows with no plan. You end up with mismatched shelves, loose hooks and piled-up bins.
A system works better for three reasons:
- Cabinet depths match, so car doors open without hitting anything.
- The workbench runs as one clean work surface.
- Tall cabinets use the full height of the wall, up to 8 or 9 feet.
Picture a 12-foot wall. A tall cabinet sits at one end. A workbench with drawers sits in the middle. Another tall cabinet closes the other end. A slatwall panel on the side wall holds hand tools. Everything fits together and has a purpose.
A full system costs more at the start. It usually lasts longer and uses space better. It also copes with corners, ducts and uneven walls.
Organize Your Garage by Zones
Zones give every category a home. They keep the garage tidy after the big clean-out.
Plan six to eight zones:
- Tools and hardware
- Gardening and yard care
- Sports and outdoor play
- Seasonal and holiday decor
- Household overflow
- Recycling and waste
- Renovation supplies
Put supplies near the garage door. Put tools by the workbench. Put recycling near the house door. Hang sports gear near the family entrance.
Add a drop zone by the house door. A small shelf or a few hooks catch keys, gloves and leashes before they spread. If you want a full setup, see our mudroom storage options.
Label bins and shelves. Face labels outward. Use one colour per family member.
Example. A Laval family has two kids, skates, skis and bikes. They give one wall to sports gear. Each child gets a labelled bin. They keep 36 inches clear from the house door to the car. Planning a garage in Laval? We serve that area too.
Garage Organization Ideas for Montréal Seasons
Four seasons change what you store. Plan for the swap.
Winter gear: snow blowers, shovels, ice melt, winter tires, skis, snowboards and hockey bags.
Summer gear: mowers, garden soil, patio cushions, bikes and barbecue tools.
Swap gear twice a year. In April, move winter items up and bring bikes and garden tools down. In October, reverse it. Quebec requires winter tires from December 1 to March 15, so book your tire change early. See the Quebec winter tire rules and the SAAQ winter preparation page.
Wet gear needs care. Set boot trays by the door. Add drying racks for hockey equipment. Hang coats away from cardboard boxes. Use weather-resistant bins with tight lids near the garage door, where wind and snow blow in.
Keep shovels and ice melt at the front in winter. Pick two fixed weekends a year for the swap. Do not wait for the first storm.
When Custom Garage Storage Makes Sense
Some garages do not suit standard storage. Many Montréal homes have narrow single-lane garages. Others have furnace ducts, concrete ledges, steps or support columns in the way.
Custom cabinets work around these problems. They fit into corners. They sit above steps. They go around columns. They use the space without waste.
Take a garage that fits one and a half cars. One wall may stay open. Tall, shallow cabinets work well there. Car doors open fully and the paint stays safe.
Custom storage also suits woodworking tools, bikes and car parts. These items need careful storage.
Do not rush into custom. A plain rectangular garage with little to store may only need steel racks and one overhead platform.
How Design & Supply Designs Your Garage Cabinets
We design garage cabinets, workbenches, tall storage and organized storage systems for homes in Greater Montréal. Here is how it works:
- Send your space. Upload measurements, photos and videos through the 3-Step Space Planner.
- Design live. Meet a designer online. We build the design in CAD and change it as you talk.
- Review your quote. You get an itemized quote, often the same day when possible.
- Approve and choose. Pick up your cabinets, take curbside delivery or book local installation.
Cabinets arrive fully assembled. Our projects include a 10-year structural warranty. The planner does not replace professional measuring, so we confirm final dimensions before production.
The live design session is free for qualified projects. Learn more on how it works, see real work in the project gallery or read the FAQ. We install in Montréal, Laval, the West Island and the South Shore.
Connect Your Garage With the Rest of Your Home
A garage works with the rest of the house. Closets hold clothes. The basement holds records. The garage holds the dirty and bulky items.
Many homeowners fix their closets and garage together. Each space helps the other. In May, move winter coats from bedroom closets to labelled garage bins. That frees closet rods for current-season clothes. Zoning works the same way in closets and laundry rooms. We design custom closets too, so you can plan both spaces with one team.
Garage Organization FAQ
Where do I start with garage organization?
Measure the space, sort your items and mark zones with painter’s tape. Plan the storage after that.
What is best for rarely used items?
Overhead racks. They keep seasonal gear and luggage off the floor and out of the way.
Do I need custom garage cabinets?
Not always. A simple rectangular garage may only need steel racks. Custom cabinets help with narrow, uneven or crowded garages.
Can I get a quote online?
Yes. Send your measurements and photos, meet a designer online and review your quote. It is often ready the same day when possible.
